Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Artist in Residence Program

Objective Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (FAAM) Artist in Residence Program invites artists from across Japan and worldwide, including but not limited to Asian countries and regions. The program provides them with opportunities to stay in Fukuoka, create and exhibit their artworks so that they can encourage each other to achieve their full potential and expand careers to the world. FAAM hopes Fukuoka citizens get a deeper understanding of contemporary art, Asian art, and different cultures through their engagement in this program. Building human and organizational networks on international levels will also be the goal for FAAM to function as a center of interaction in Asian art.
Organization activities - Collaborative art-making with citizens, etc.
- Exhibition to show the outcomes of the residency program
- Events such as artist talks or workshops
Founded in 1999
Background At the time of its opening in 1999 as a museum dedicated to Asian modern and contemporary art, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum has not only provided open access to its public collections starting since the 1970s but also invited artists or researchers from Asian countries and regions and conducted various art exchange programs to newly function as an “interactive art museum.”
Since 2022, as part of Fukuoka Art Next (a new governmental policy that encourages artistic activities in the city), eight artists (groups) have been invited every year from Japan and across the world, including but not limited to Asian countries or regions to work in the Artist Cafe Fukuoka (a place founded by the city government to offer support to emerging local artists and encourage interactions between them).
Location / Environment Fukuoka Asian Art Museum: The museum is on the 7th and 8th floor of a commercial complex located at the center of Fukuoka city.
Artist Cafe Fukuoka: Artists are expected to work in studios located inside the renovated building of a former junior high school in Maizuru Park, Fukuoka.
