Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Artist in Residence Program

Application period Apr. 11, 2022 (Mon.) - May. 31, 2022 (Tue.)
Description FAAM aims to invite artists from Japan and abroad for a certain period of time, to provide them with various opportunities to create and exhibit artworks in Fukuoka, so that they could encourage each other to achieve their full potential to the world from Fukuoka city. It also tries to deepen the citizens’ understanding in contemporary art and different cultures to improve the quality of local culture by promoting art exchange with the citizens. Through this program, FAAM forges to build human and organizational networks on international levels.

Since its opening in 1999, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum has maintained the Artists-in-Residence program for Asian artists, as one of its key missions. From the fiscal year 2022, the museum will refurbish and enhance its' residency program, for example by expanding the open call for artists around the globe, including but not limited to Asia, as well as Japan and abroad. In addition, the artists' studio for art-making will be located at an artist cafe/AIR studio in a renovated building of an old secondary school (to be confirmed).

Residency location Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, AIR Studio (to be confirmed) [The 1st floor of an old school building]
Residency period 1) Between September and December, 2022 (by maximum 90 days)
2) Between January and March, 2023 (by maximum 60 days)
* Period of residency will be decided according to the proposed project plan and the discussion between FAAM and candidates.
Qualification 4-6 artists/groups (contemporary art)

1) Artists from abroad.
One person or group for each period.
Japanese nationals living overseas are not eligible.

2) Artists from Japan.
One person or group for each period.
Any nationals living in Japan, except for those allocated in Fukuoka

3) Artists from Fukuoka
One person or group for each period.
Applicants must be a resident either in Fukuoka or a place nearby, who should be able to work at the designated studio 5days a week.
No accommodation fees are provided. Any nationals are eligible.
Pay by artists / Support for artists 1) Expenses for travel, accommodation, living, art-making and installation of the work
2) Support for art-making as well as collaborations with local professionals in the art field and universities, etc.
3) Publicize applicants’ activities/artworks
Selection process The FAAM Selection Board of the Artist in Residence Program will select the successful candidates. Results will be announced on the FAAM website by the beginning of July 2022. The successful candidates will be notified directly by FAAM.
