Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Artist in Residence Program

Description Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (FAAM) aims to invite artists from Japan and abroad for a certain period of time, to provide them with various opportunities to create and exhibit artworks in Fukuoka, so that they could encourage each other to achieve their full potential to the world from Fukuoka city.

Since its opening in 1999, FAAM has continued to invite Asian artists as one of its important activities, and in FY2022, the program was renewed and greatly expanded to include artists from other Asian countries and those living in Japan. In addition, the production site is Artist Cafe Fukuoka (studios), which is located in the former junior high school building.

Residency location Artist Cafe Fukuoka [inside an old school building], Fukuoka Asian Art Museum
Residency period 1. Between July and October, 2023 (by maximum 90 days)
2. Between September and December, 2023 (by maximum 90 days)
3. Between January and March, 2024 (by maximum 60 days)

*Period of residency will be decided according to the proposed project plan and the discussion between FAAM and candidates.
Qualification Around 9 artists/groups in total (contemporary art)

1) Artists from abroad
4 artists in total for all the residency period.
Japanese nationals living overseas are not eligible.

2) Artists from Japan
2 artists in total for all the residency period.
Any nationals living in Japan, except for those allocated in Fukuoka.

3) Artists from Fukuoka
3 artists in total for all the residency period.
Applicants must be a resident either in Fukuoka or a place nearby, who should be able to work at the designated studio 4 days a week.
No accommodation fees are provided. Any nationals are eligible.
Pay by artists / Support for artists - Expenses for travel, accommodation, living, art-making (up to 600,000 yen) and exhibition.
- Support for art-making as well as collaborations with local professionals in the art field and universities, etc.
- Publicize the activities of the artists by showing their residency works to the public.
Selection process The FAAM Selection Board of the Artist in Residence Program will select the successful candidates. Results will be announced on the FAAM website by the March 2023. The successful candidates will be notified directly by FAAM.
