Objective To host artists from Japan and abroad in a small village of six houses on the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi, run by artists who live on site, and to offer an environment where making and daily life sit side by side. Through collaboration between residents, member artists, local businesses and the municipality, 6okken connects the region with contemporary art.

Founded in 2023
Background 6okken began when a group of artists made a base of six houses standing together in the Oishi area at the foot of Mt. Fuji, building a place where living and making happen side by side. It was incorporated as a general incorporated association in 2023 and began hosting residents the same year.
Location / Environment A small village in the Oishi area on the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi, facing Mt. Fuji. The lakeshore is within walking distance, and the garden looks out over the mountain and the lake. Orchards and quiet holiday houses surround the site. About two hours from Tokyo by highway bus.
Notes Fees: 280,000 JPY per four-week term for the first resident plus 100,000 JPY per additional person (summer terms 320,000 JPY; winter kerosene at cost). No obligation to present outcomes. Applications year-round via the form on our website, at least 60 days before the intended term. We can advise on grant applications.

A shared living room and studio (House 3) and a garage for larger work. Residents can also work inside their own house.

Accommodations

Available

Two whole houses for residents: HOUSE4 (up to six people) and HOUSE5 (up to seven), each with kitchen, Wi-Fi and full amenities. A third house hosts short stays. Partners and children are welcome.

Presentation space

Not available

There is no dedicated gallery, but open studios and talks can be held in the garden, the garage and the shared studio, led by the artists themselves (never required).

Location

From Shinjuku, about 2 hours to Kawaguchiko Station by highway bus, then about 15 minutes by car (we pick residents up at the station on the first day). By train: JR Chuo Line to Otsuki, then the Fujikyu Railway to Kawaguchiko Station.
