Tokonomato

Objective Tokonomato is an artist-run residency program based in Nagano City. Focused on short-term residencies, it provides a space where artists can concentrate on their own creative practice, research, and experimentation. Through immersion in Japan's cultural and natural environment, residents are encouraged to deepen their practice and explore new perspectives and directions in their work. The program values dialogue, sustained artistic practice, and meaningful exchange with local communities and diverse cultural perspectives.

Founded in 2025
Background Tokonomato grew out of the founder's own artistic and curatorial practice and ongoing exchange with international artists. Set within the quiet environment of Nagano, it aims to provide a place where artists can focus on their work while drawing inspiration from Japan's cultural and natural environment, creating space for new perspectives and developments in their practice.
Location / Environment Located in the quiet hillside neighborhood of Uematsu in eastern Nagano City, Tokonomato offers a calm environment with easy access to both central Nagano and the surrounding natural landscape. Zenkoji Temple and the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum are within walking distance, while nearby destinations such as Togakushi, Iizuna, Hakuba, and Lake Nojiri are easily accessible. Nagano is also conveniently connected to Tokyo by Shinkansen in under 90 minutes.

Approximately 10–15 minutes by bus or car from JR Nagano Station. Around 15 minutes on foot from Zenkoji Temple. Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes from Tokyo Station via Hokuriku Shinkansen.
