Gogoshima Jikan Artist-in-Residence

Objective This program opens a vacant traditional house over 100 years old on Gogoshima Island, Matsuyama, Ehime as a residency and production site for artists. By transforming part of the house into a lodging space as artwork, the program aims to create new flows of visitors to the island and connect them to local exchange and small-scale economic circulation.
Organization activities The program invites artists, creators and designers to work in residence on selected areas of a traditional house on Gogoshima Island. Candidate spaces include future guest rooms, the earthen floor area, the former Goemon-buro bath area, corridors, fittings, storage spaces, and points of contact with the garden. Forms may include walls, floors, ceilings, lighting, furniture, installation, sound, scent, materials, textiles, painting, sculpture and signage, with an emphasis on spatial expressions that guests can experience during their stay.

Background Rural and island communities face population decline, aging, an increase in vacant houses, and a shortage of people sustaining local communities. Gogoshima also faces these issues, while retaining valuable local resources such as the sea, mountains, citrus fields, village life, old houses and island culture. This residency began as an initial attempt to open a traditional house before its full operation as a private lodging facility and to carry out spatial renovation as an artistic production process.
Location / Environment Gogoshima is one of the Kutsuna Islands off the coast of Matsuyama, about 10 minutes by ferry from the city. It offers views of Iyo-Kofuji and surrounding mountains, an indented coastline, and everyday island life with the sea, mountains, fields and settlements nearby. In recent years it has drawn attention as more newcomers and accommodation facilities have appeared.

Artists select from spaces such as a room, earthen floor area, former Goemon-buro bath area, corridors, storage areas and connections with the garden, while considering safety, cleanability, durability and comfort for continued use as accommodation.

From Matsuyama city, take a ferry to Gogoshima Island (about 10 minutes) and proceed to the Yuramachi area. The site is located at 793-1 Yuramachi, Matsuyama, Ehime. From Takahama Port, located right in front of the station, take a ferry for about 10 minutes to Kojima Island and disembark at Yura Port. It is a 7-minute walk from Yura Port.
