Program

Kyoto Art Center

Application period Oct. 1, 2021 (Fri.) - Oct. 30, 2021 (Sat.)
Description Since its establishment in 2000, the Kyoto Art Center has been implementing the Artist in Residence (AIR) program. This program, which provides opportunities for artists to stay and work in Kyoto while experiencing its culture, has produced many encounters and artworks.
However, due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection and the present restrictions of entry into Japan for foreigners, it has been difficult to implement the AIR program. Given the situation, the Kyoto Art Center decided to implement the online program "WE AGE" to seek new encounters.

"WE AGE" was the annual theme for the 20th anniversary of the Kyoto Art Center in 2020. Facing the obvious fact that everyone ages equally, we have implemented a variety of projects to reflect on the accumulation of time. In particular, the "WE AGE" project, which was opened only to people aged 65 and over, attracted ambitious and energetic artwork plans, resulting in a group exhibition and multiple performances.

For the year 2021/2022, we have decided to extend the "WE AGE" project to an online residency program, by inviting artists over the age of 65 who want to create artworks through dialogue and remote research, offering them a connection with Kyoto and Japanese culture. As there is no need to travel long distances or be away from home for long periods of time, we think that online AIR can be an opportunity for artists of all ages who have had difficulty participating in artist residencies. Based on the concept of "stimulating each other and growing together,” the Kyoto Art Center's AIR program aims to provide a place where artists from all over the world can share their work and interact with each other.

In order to share the research and projects that will be created during the Online Residency Program "WE AGE", a final presentation will be held in March 2022. We will provide all the help necessary to the participants so they can give shape to their project. This presentation may take the form of an exhibition inside the Kyoto Art Center, a public projection, an online conference or workshop, or any other form suitable to the participant’s work.
