| Description | Artist in Residence KOBE (AiRK) OPEN CALL provides residency accommodations for artists active both within Japan and internationally. In addition to conducting research and creating work during their stay in Kobe, participating artists are expected to engage with the local community through public programs. Rather than being limited to final exhibitions, the format of these programs is flexible—ranging from research presentations and open studios to workshops and talk events—and will be determined in consultation with residency staff to best suit each artist’s practice. AiRK will assist in coordinating research and production for these community engagement programs and provide suitable venues. *Successful applicants will be provided with an official Letter of Acceptance to support applications for external grants and funding. |

| Residency period | Your stay must start between September 1 and December 29, 2026, and be between 1 and 3 months in length. *If you are planning an exhibition, we recommend a stay of at least 2 months. |
| Qualification | Duration: Individual artists or groups available to reside and work at AiRK for 1 to 3 months. Activity: Must be capable of conducting research and creative work independently while based in Kobe. Community Engagement: Willingness to actively engage with the local community during the residency. Language: Functional communication skills in either Japanese or English. Expenses: Must be able to cover personal travel (including airfare), living expenses, and all costs associated with production and research. Co-living: Ability to respect house rules and live cooperatively with fellow residents and staff. |
| Pay by artists / Support for artists | Accommodation Expenses Rate: 120,000 JPY per 4 weeks for one person (30,000 JPY per additional week). Room Type: Private bedroom with shared bathroom and kitchen. Additional Guest: 60,000 JPY per 4 weeks for an additional person sharing the same room. Inclusions & Exclusions: Utilities are included. Food, transportation, coordination fees, and art materials are not included. AiRK Support & Services - Support from residency staff in planning and executing community engagement programs. - Access to AiRK’s private studio space (in collaboration with partner facilities). Alternative production spaces (e.g., local art centers or dance centers) can also be arranged upon request through AiRK’s cultural partners. - Venue arrangements for presentations in collaboration with cultural facilities in Kobe. - Promotional and PR support, including event announcements |
