Objective Perched high above Kyoto, Villa Kujoyama is a pluridisciplinary arts residency which has been welcoming since 1992 established and emerging artists seeking to work on a project in connection with Japan.

Today's Villa Kujoyama is one of France's most prestigious overseas art residencies, managed in coordination with Institut français (Paris) – the cultural arm of the Ministry of European and Foreign Affairs -, as one of the branches of Institut français du Japon. It plays a driving role in encouraging mobility among practitioners through research programmes that are designed to promote a greater understanding of disciplines, from traditional hand-crafts to digital creation, not forgetting the visual and performing arts. With the support of its principal patron since 2014, the Fondation Bettencourt Schueller, day after day, Villa Kujoyama implements an ambitious project in synergy with numerous professionals across multiple sectors.

Throughout their residency at Villa Kujoyama, which ranges from four to six months, successful applicants receive guidance from a designated on-site team, and are invited to engage with artistic, cultural, academic and business environments in Japan, with no obligation to produce a work at the end of the residency.

Its residency exchange programmes, the pooling of expertise in contemporary artistic practice, and unprecedented post-residency support confirm Villa Kujoyama as a naturally outward-looking institution; a place to rethink ideas and frontiers.

Founded in 1992
Background Present-day Villa Kujoyama traces back to the first French-Japanese cultural centre, which opened in 1924. The decision to rehabilitate and transform this initial venture into a place for artistic research originated in a shared wish to promote intercultural dialogue through artistic and intellectual exchanges – and contemporary creation. Conceived by renowned Japanese architect Kunio Kato, the building with glass and fair-faced concrets embodies a combinaison of Japanese and French perspectives. While keeping its links to Kyoto with its paranomic view over the city, Villa Kujoyama also fosters the artists' research and creativity, with its beautiful and quiet natural environment.
Location / Environment The facility is located in a residential area in the woods of Kujo mountain, in the eastern part of Kyoto.
A few subway stations from central Kyoto.
