Objective A place of fun relaxation for locals,
a place of rest for travelers,
a place that is open to anyone.
But there is also something there (art) that is always asking something.
If this kind of place actually existed,
what kind of changes would it bring to the town?
This place is in fact
that kind of "Place of Social Experiment".

Founded in 2021
Background In June 2020, we launched a volunteer shopping district initiative called "Togatta Project" as a city planning group. While considering possible art projects to start as part of a regional stimulus program, we decided to launch an "Artist in Residence" project, and renovated an empty shop (previously the Maruyoshi Fish Shop). In March 2021, we planned a test debut exhibition. And in April, we started operating as an Artist in Residence program.
Location / Environment Approx. 1 hr. by bus from Sendai City. A micro-residency situated in the center of a shopping district in the tiny Togatta Hot Spring area at the foot of "Mount Zao Okama Crater", one of Japan's most amazing calderas. A communal bathhouse, park area, and shopping district stretch out before the eye. The art space is approx. 40 square meters. This is also the birthplace of the traditional industry "traditional kokeshi dolls" (the Togatta style kokeshi dolls).
Notes The Residence building does not have baths, but residents can freely use the hot spring at a nearby ryokan inn.
