| Objective | Kapo (Kanazawa Art Port) is an art community led through the initiative of its artists. It has studios in which artists live, and creates spaces for the expressive activities of the community. It also conducts an ongoing artist in residence program for artists from Japan and abroad. As a community site for the region, it aims to be a port that is open to the world, bringing people together and forging bonds between them. |

| Background | CAAK, Kapo, and Machiya Guest House are all spun off from projects of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. CAAK plans and organizes lectures and art projects with the aim of transversing the boundary between art and architecture, while Kapo is a spacious gallery/ production studio complex, which was transformed from a printing factory under the initiative of artists; and and Machiya Guest House is a renovated 120 year-old traditional Kanazawa Machiya house. The artist-in-residence program started in 2010 in the collaboration among the three projects with distinct characteristics to provide unique, Kanazawa-specific support for artists. In 2014, Kapo changed its location to a building in Kanazawa that was once occupied by a bank. CAAK was closed in 2016. Kapo takes over CAAK's activity. |
| Location / Environment | With a population of 450,000 people, Kanazawa City is the heart of Hokuriku region and has rich tradition and legacy of the culture of Edo era. Kapo and Machiya Guest House are all located in the central Kanazawa, and at walking distance from the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa and Kenroku-en. Close to Kanazawa College of Art, too. Participating artists can stay, create and exhibit their art works at Kapo. |
