Description SPACE DEPARTMENT is a design hub and artist-in-residence facility located in the World Heritage city of Nara. It accepts and encourages artists, architects, designers, researchers, and students to stay, conduct research and creative activities, and present the results to the local community.

This program is open to artists, architects, designers, photographers, and others involved in architecture and "space" design.
The program provides a venue for those interested and motivated to study Japanese architecture, culture, and sensibility to present their work and supports connecting them with local artists and communities.
Residency location SPACE DEPARTMENT
Residency period From April 1, 2023 (Sat) to March 31, 2024 (Sun), between 1 month and 3 months (negotiable)
Qualification -Artists, architects, designers, researchers, and students of spatial design, architecture, and the built environment.
-Those who are interested in reflecting Japanese culture and philosophy in their works and ideas while staying in the ancient capital Nara.
-Those who are able to hold at least one workshop, event, lecture, exhibition, research presentation, etc. during the residency period (we will provide space and support for these events to the extent possible).
-Those who are able to interact with other artists and local residents in the neighborhood with good relations.
-Preference will be given to applicants who can stay for more than one month. If you wish to stay for a shorter period, please contact us.


Pay by artists / Support for artists Expenses
-The cost of living, activities, and accommodation during the stay is to be borne by the applicant.
-Individuals or groups (up to 4 people) are welcome.
-A deposit of ¥50,000 is required in advance. If the property is damaged or needs to be cleaned, it will be deducted from this amount, but if not, it will be refunded when you move out.
-A simple contract will be signed at the time of moving in.
-Residence fee ¥100,000 per month per person 
-For group or team:
150,000 per month for 2 persons
175,000 per month for 3 persons
200,000 / 1 month / 4 persons

- Tatami space on the 2nd floor can be used as private space.
- Use of shared spaces (1st floor space, gallery, kitchen, bath, studio tools)
*The first floor is a common space and used for used for other events and workshops during your stay.
  
Support
-Assistance and information about collaborations with local artists will be supported whenever possible.
-We will support as much as possible in providing a venue for presentations and holding events.
-Free loan of folding bicycles
*Participants are responsible for any unexpected accidents or illnesses. We strongly recommend that you purchase travel insurance.
