AIR Program information
Objective | YUI-PORT's goals are to support cultural and artistic activities, experience-based activities by young people, and international exchange activities. Furthermore, it seeks to promote mutual exchange between those engaged in cultural and artistic activities, youth, and residents, to create and communicate the allure of arts and culture, and to foster the development of spiritually rich youth that will lead the next generation. The artist in residence program accepts applications from and provides support to artists, both in Japan and abroad, wishing to engage in artistic activities in residence. Through this, it promotes the creation of an environment conducive to attracting creative people, communicating the allure of Niigata City inside Japan and overseas, and helping residents to rediscover the allure of Niigata City's nature, history, and culture through their interactions with artists in residence, cultivating local pride and attachment. |

Background | As one of the measures of the Niigata City Creative City of Cultural Exchange Vision, formulated in 2017, YUI-PORT was opened in May 2018 as a complex made from a former school, to serve as a place of residence and activity for artists and other figures from Japan and abroad, as well as a place of international exchange for young people. It carries out an artist in residence program as one of its cultural and artistic activity support programs. |

The YUI-POER complex in Niigata City, which makes use of the former Junior High School building, offers an artist-in-residence programme with the aim of supporting artists who stay and work in Niigata City, rediscovering the city's attractions and promoting exchange between artists and citizens. Long-term (up to 90 days) and short-term (up to 30 days) programmes are held alternately for each of the four seasons, with two artists each invited to participate.
