Objective By supporting the creative activities of artists and creators in the Kosudo district of Akiha Ward, Niigata City, a thriving port town on the Shinano River and steeped in history and culture, we aim to encourage new utilization of local resources, including traditional townhouse architectural space, as well as to create an environment that encourages interaction, connections, and migration and settlement, thereby building better relationships between art and the local community.
Organization activities ○Art projects, artist-in-residence
○Utilization plans for the base facility "Machiya Lab," rental business
○Information dissemination, research, etc.
Founded in 2013
Background In conjunction with the Water and Land Niigata Art Festival 2009 held by Niigata City in 2009, a vacant local town house called "Satsuma-ya" was opened to the public and began to be utilized. During the art festival in 2012, an exhibition of works by Nanjo Yoshitake was held at Satsuma-ya. In the following year of 2013, the "Satsuma-ya ART Project 2013" was implemented as a project to utilize Satsuma-ya by taking advantage of the framework of cooperation between cultural facilities in Akiha Ward.

After that, the project received subsidies related to the art festival and developed into the "Kosudo ART Project," which exhibits artworks in the historic townhouses and stores around Kosudo Honcho Street. Currently, the project is continuing its activities by moving its base to the "Machiya Lab," which is being developed through DIY.
Location / Environment The activity area is the central shopping district of the former Kosudo town, which flourished as a port on the Shinano River from the Edo to Taisho periods, and is still lined with many historic townhouses from the Meiji period. In recent years, townhouses have been renovated to open as cafes and stores, and the exteriors of buildings have been renovated to match the townscape.

The surrounding area is rich in nature, including the Shinano River, the satoyama forests of the Niitsu Hills, and the rural landscape of the Kambara Plains. There are supermarkets, drugstores, home improvement centers, and restaurants within walking distance.
