Objective | The Goethe-Institut is the Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institute, active worldwide. We promote knowledge of the German language abroad and foster international cultural cooperation. The Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa offers German artists and creators the opportunity to live and work in Japan on a three-month scholarship. The residency in Kyoto aims to provide inspiration and artistic orientation for the scholarship holders. In direct, personal exchanges with the local cultural scene, they develop new projects and establish reliable working contacts with Japanese cultural institutions and creators. |

Background | The Goethe-Institut in Kyoto was founded in 1963. In 1983, the Institute moved to its present location along the Kamogawa River, in a new building owned by the Federal Republic of Germany. The Institute has held events related to German culture and art, as well as German language courses, and has been popularly known as the "German Cultural Centre" to the Japanese public. Following renovation in autumn 2010, the Institute has been running an artist-in-residence programme since April 2011. |
