Description | During the residency, participants will stay in the city of Kyoto with other fellow writers and translators, are given time and space to concentrate on their writing, and attend two official events. We do not either impose any theme on their writing or require completion of work during the period. Qualification | - Fiction writers and/or poets of any language(s) with at least one full-length book publication are eligible. - The applicants must be able to participate in the residency and its official events in full. - Basic communication skills in either English or Japanese will be required. - We encourage the applicants to provide proposals for outreach events other than the two official events. - Writers who live in Japan and write in other languages are welcome to apply. |
Pay by artists / Support for artists | - A single hotel room in the City of Kyoto during the duration of the residency - A writing space (e.g. a co-working space) in the City of Kyoto - A round trip ticket from the nearby international airport to Osaka and the ground transport from Osaka to Kyoto (For writers living in Japan, the transportation from their address in Japan to Kyoto) - ¥5,000 per diem - Other means of non-monetary support from the Residency committee members and the staff |
Selection process | A board of specialists will assess applications and select the participants. We plan to notify the applicants of the results in mid-May. Some applicants may be invited to an online interview. We will not accept any inquiries about the results of the selection. |

Application and fee | - Entry form <https://forms.gle/hetKsUdFBsyqwWVy5> A copy of your PayPal payment receipt - BIO(No more than 2 pages in A4/Letter size, in English or Japanese) - Description of yourself and your current project (No more than 2 pages in A4/Letter size, in English or Japanese) - Sample work(No more than 30 pages of fiction in A4/Letter size OR between 5 to 10 pieces of poetry; We accept submissions in any language(s). Creative nonfiction writers are not eligible.) - English or Japanese translation of your sample work (if available). (This is optional.) Your e-mail’s subject title has to be “2023 Kyoto Writers Residency Application”. An application fee of ¥2,000 must be paid through PayPal before you submit your entry form. Notifications | - Participants from overseas are required to purchase travel insurance on their own and provide a copy of the insurance policy to the residency committee before leaving their country. - Kyoto Writers Residency will not provide any material or monetary support other than the ones stated in Section III. - The participants will be asked to sign an agreement. The participants are responsible for any unexpected accidents or incidents during the residency. - The participants are responsible to do their preparations for their creative writing and research. Kyoto Writers Residency will ask the participants to provide written feedback after the residency period. - If you require any special arrangements for your residency, please contact us beforehand. The support described is awarded to the selected author only. |
