  • Matadero MadridMadrid, Spain

Matadero Madrid is run by Madrid City Council's Department of Culture, Turism and Sports. One of the characteristics of a residency centre is that it provides workspaces for creators in which they can develop their practice in general, or a specific project. The centre’s work is based on the firm belief that public institutions are duty bound to support experimentation rather than the reproduction of standard formulas. This means that Matadero Madrid plays with new formats of cultural production, which provides residency work spaces for homegrown and overseas creative artists. Through agreements with cultural institutions in other countries, Matadero Madrid runs a programme of regular interdisciplinary residencies. After a period of coexistence in the work spaces, the processes are opened up to the local community with a public viewing. [Photo: official website]

  • L’AlbaCharleroi (Walloon Region), Belgium

L'alba (Latin 'the dawn'), signifying the "House of Shared Talents", is an artist residence founded by Melanie de Biasio. The house aims to be a place of encounters, simplicity, and exchanges, a playground to broaden horizons. L'Alba offers creators a moment of pause, a warm and benevolent refuge, a laboratory where they can freely experiment with alternate paths, thus allowing the still submerged part of their talent to blossom and "let the imprudence come...", to paraphrase Alain Bashung. There is currently no call for residencies. Instead, we work based on the availability of spaces and the compelling nature of the projects presented at the application stage. Your application is welcome at any time. Four sectors are eligible for the residency: Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Literature and Books, and Heritage. The long-term residency (from 1 to 2 months), the medium-term residency (1 to 2 weeks), and the short-term residency (1 to 2 days) are available.
