HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme is an international artist residency organisation established in 1998. The HIAP residency programme offers time and space for developing new work in dialogue with the local art scene. The goal is to support experimental, cross-disciplinary art practices and to actively contribute to topical debates within and around the context of art. The residencies for artists, curators and other cultural practitioners in Suomenlinna island and Cable Factory in Helsinki. The residency periods are between 1-11 months. The residencies offer time and space open-ended research and exploration. The Open Studios event is an opportunity to present the work-in-progress for art professionals and general public. Taking part in the Open Studios event is optional. The residencies for artists are typically 3 or 11 months, and for curators 1-2 months. The residencies are arranged with numerous partner organisations and the residents are chosen via open calls or by invitation. The Saari Residence, maintained by Kone Foundation, is a residence located in Mynämäki, Southwest Finland, for artists of all disciplines and nationalities. At the Saari Residence, artists and researchers can focus on their work in a peaceful rural environment and share their thoughts and experiences with colleagues. The residence’s long-term activities and thinking are underpinned by an ecological approach, which also covers social and psychological sustainability. Its keywords are slowness, insight and change. The residency places are intended for individual professional artists, fiction writers, poets and novelists, translators, composers, sound artists, curators, and critics, artistic duos, and artistic collectives (i.e., a workgroup or established organisation with a Business ID) of all disciplines and all nationalities for the purpose of carrying out a project proposed in advance. RaumArs is one of Finland's oldest artist residencies, where artists from different disciplines carry out collaborative and participatory art projects, workshops, events and performances with local communities and individuals. Over the years, RaumArs artists have worked with schools, art and cultural institutions, and various associations. On request, our partners can offer working spaces for wood or textile work, for example, as well as particularly interesting collaborations within two World Heritage sites. From the beginning of 2025, the association will be based in the newly renovated art house for RaumArs. In addition to the residence, artists will have space for exhibitions. The Serlachius Residency is a guest studio, maintained by Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation, for professionals of the creative sector working in the visual arts. The Serlachius Residency was established in 2015 in cooperation with the Mänttä Art Festival. Visual artists, art historians, researchers or curators may apply to the Serlachius Residency. The residency provides a peaceful working environment. We produce for Art Town Mänttä-Vilppula small events that provide a forum for interaction between the public and residency guests. For the Serlachius Residency, responsibility for the environment is a matter of the heart. Our goal is to minimize the amount of waste generated and the negative environmental impact.
As an international cultural centre in Berlin since 1975, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien has implemented and exhibited hundreds of projects with over 2.500 artists. The International Studio Programme is a platform for emerging artists from around the world. Over a fixed period, the focus of the Künstlerhaus Bethanien’s efforts lies on providing individual support and establishing connections between the artists in the program and the wider local context. The program offers curatorial support in the implementation of the artists’ projects, supplying workshops and technical infrastructure, presenting the projects produced, advertising all events organised by the resident artists, holding at least two annual “Open Studio”, editing and distributing the publications related to the projects presented at the institution, establishing contacts with international curators, critics, publicists, theorists, gallery owners and collectors, hosting seminars, talks and readings, liaising the artists with international institutions, projects and exhibitions. aqb is an independent art centre in Budapest, Hungary, was initiated in 2012. It functions as an exhibition place for contemporary art, a studio house, and an artist-in-residence program in a unique renovated factory building, the former Haggenmacher brewery. art quarter budapest’s International Artist-in-Residence host artists in the fields of visual arts, Performing arts, Music and sound art, Literature and literary translation, Illustration and design and art theory, curatorial and art management in the duration between 1 to 3 months. In addition to mediation in organizing exhibitions and presentations at aqb and other galleries and institutions in Budapest, the residency program offers meetings and lectures with Hungarian curators and art critics.
The Jan van Eyck Academie welcomes some 45 participants from all over the world annually. Next to visual artists, the academy is open to designers—ranging from graphic design, fashion, food to social design—architects, curators, and writers. Each year, our call for applications is open and candidates can apply for an 11-month residency. The selection committee chooses new participants on the basis of the submitted project plans and documentation. The selected artists have in common an inquisitive, open and engaged attitude, their work testifies to an art practice that is investigative and committed. The Jan van Eyck Academie offers its participants the tools to further develop, materialise and disseminate their research. They are encouraged to explore their ideas in a critical and reciprocal relationship with each other and the world—and in this way, make a contribution to the development of the arts and their significance for society.
Cittadellarte, Fondazione Pistoletto’s programme of artists’ residencies was founded in 1999. The programme is open to artists and professionals from all over the world and it aims at providing instruments for “artivators”, i.e. subjects working at the boundaries between artistic practices, processes of social change and collaborations with communities external to the art world, weaving together moments of interdisciplinary research, exchange of knowledge and practical activities. Our programme is focusing on season long research themes and developing four types of residency of different durations and with different objectives, grouped under the general heading of UNIDEE Residency Programs: UNIDEE Modules, Research Residency, Connective Residency and Organisations in Residency. Cittadellarte is located within the grade listed premises of the former Trombetta Wool Mill, a testimony of Biella’s past as one of the first European hubs within the textile industry.
Córtex Frontal is a multidisciplinary cultural project created in 2016 by the Cultural Association Córtexcult, in Arraiolos, Alentejo, Portugal. Córtex Frontal organizes artist residencies, workshops and exhibitions on Visual Arts, Performative Arts, Literature & Music. Our goal is to promote and develop cultural projects, establishing a lively dialogue between artists from various disciplines, the local community and the territory. The Córtex Frontal house is a labyrinthic 800m2 house with 9 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen, laundry, living rooms, indoor and outdoor dinning area, studios, gallery, patio and garden. The Artist-in-residence program aims to bring together artists from different disciplines for a concentrated period of minimum 4 weeks. The program encourages artists to share their knowledge with the local community and provides a deep approach to the territory.
