1646 is an art space in The Hague with an experimental, international and free public program. 1646 wants to contribute to an increasingly complex society by challenging existing systems and traditional views, to reflect on the questions that live among us all. 1646 offers fully-funded residencies for (inter)national artists and curators to stay and work/research at our location in The Hague. These residencies support innovative practices, develop global networks, and engage the local art community. Residents are invited to stay at 1646’s guest apartment and work in the residency studio. The residency is not focused on an end result, but provides a space for research, work and reflection, while getting familiar with The Hague and The Netherlands. A public event concludes the residency period. [Photo: Maarten Nauw]
The Jan van Eyck Academie welcomes some 45 participants from all over the world annually. Next to visual artists, the academy is open to designers—ranging from graphic design, fashion, food to social design—architects, curators, and writers. Each year, our call for applications is open and candidates can apply for an 11-month residency. The selection committee chooses new participants on the basis of the submitted project plans and documentation. The selected artists have in common an inquisitive, open and engaged attitude, their work testifies to an art practice that is investigative and committed. The Jan van Eyck Academie offers its participants the tools to further develop, materialise and disseminate their research. They are encouraged to explore their ideas in a critical and reciprocal relationship with each other and the world—and in this way, make a contribution to the development of the arts and their significance for society.
The restored sexton’s house from Van Gogh’s period is just a stone’s throw from the Vincent van Gogh House. A gallery has been established in this annex. Next to this is a guest studio housing a Van Gogh ‘Artist in Residence’. Artists from home and abroad are invited to work here for a period of time in Van Gogh’s spirit. The results of this are then presented in the Van Gogh Gallery. A second guest studio opened in 2021. This is located in a monumental Flemish barn on Landgoed De Moeren in the future Van Gogh National Park. Here artists work for two months in the natural environment that exudes the atmosphere of Van Gogh.
